General Team Duties

Publishing Technical Support (PTS) supports the Government Accountability Office (GAO) Publications & Dissemination Department by providing expertise in publishing best practices, guidance on graphic design; troubleshoots graphic and publishing software issues; supports GAO preflight/prepress processes; assures Section 508 compliance for GAO publishing products; develops publishing templates for MS Word; Adobe InDesign and Adobe FrameMaker; develops software automation solutions supporting the publication process; creates CD/multi-media versions of GAO products; provides guidance on optimizing PC platforms and software for all publishing tasks, provides related help desk support to all GAO staff.


  • Remediating MS Word files to create 508 compliant PDFs (using CommonLook Office).

  • Remediating PDFs to create 508 compliant PDFs (using Adobe Acrobat and CommonLook PDF Global Access).

  • Providing help desk support the use of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat & MS Office in the publishing process.

  • Preflight GAO reports for printing requirements.

  • Adjust MS Word templates and formatting to accommodate special requests for unique GAO reports.

Education and Skill Requirements

Experience: 3-4 years

Degree Requirements: Bachelors

Operating System: Windows 7/10 Professional

Hardware: PCs

Software: MS Office (MS Word), Adobe Acrobat, experience remediating PDFs for 508 compliance and/or generating 508 compliant PDFs using software like CommonLook Office.

Other: Familiarity with desktop publishing and best practices for print and electronic publishing. Knowledge of 508 best practices. Experience remediating documents for 508 compliance. Experience providing customer service/technical support in an IT and/or publishing field.

Desired Experience:

Experience: 4-8 years

Software: Expert in MS Office (especially MS Word), Adobe Creative Suite, (Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop) expertise remediating PDFs for 508 compliance using Adobe Acrobat Pro or CommonLook PDF Global Access.

Other: Extensive experience using MS Office. Ideal candidate will have experience laying out and publishing long documents with MS Word; Experience developing software solutions in MS Office using Visual Basic Applications (VBA); Experience in desktop publishing; Experience providing customer service/technical support. Familiarity with Enfocus Pitstop (plug-in for Adobe Acrobat). Extensive knowledge of Section 508 compliance. Familiarity with CommonLook PDF Global Access (plug-in for Adobe Acrobat)
